Window Styles
There are various styles of windows, each with its own set of features, benefits, and designconsiderations. Here are some common types of residential windows:

These windows have two sashes, but only the bottom sash moves up and down. The top sash is fixed.
Double-Hung Windows
Both sashes in the window frame move up and down. This allows for better ventilation and easier cleaning.
Casement Windows
These windows are hinged at the sides and open outward. They provide a clear outdoor view and can be fully opened for ventilation.
Awning Windows
Hinged at the top, these windows open outward and upward. They’re often used for ventilation above doors or other windows, and their design help skeep rain out when they’re open.
Sliding Windows
These windows open by sliding horizontally along the window frame. They’re easy to use and great for wide openings
Bay Windows
These are a combination of three windows that extend from your home. They typically have a large central window flanked by smaller windows angled off thecenter.
Bow Windows
Similar to bay windows, these consist of four or more windows joined together to create a curve. They add space to a room and lots of natural light.

These large, stationary windows don’t open. They’re designed to provide a clear, unobstructed view of the outside.
Skylight Windows

Hopper Windows
These are similar to casement and awning windows but hinged at the bottom and open inward. They’re often used in basements or bathrooms.
Specialty Windows

Storm Windows
These are installed outside or inside the main glass windows to provide an extra layer of insulation and wind protection.
Transom Windows
These small windows are typically used over doors or other windows to let in more light. They can be either stationary or operable.
Egress Windows
These are designed for safety and are large enough for a person toescape through in anemergency. They’re required in bedrooms & basements bybuilding codes in many areas.
